The Big Summer Road Trip
We've just returned from our BIG SUMMER ROAD TRIP! It was a fabulous fun-filled adventure; we visited Redding, CA, Ashland, Lincoln City, Tillamook, Newport, Depoe Bay, and Bandon, OR, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park and Humboldt Redwoods State Park, the Avenue of the Giants, and Garberville/Redway, CA.
We stayed in three motels during our trip (being fortunate enough to stay with friends the rest of the nights):
Hilton Garden Inn Redding, CA -- Okay, this isn't really a motel; it's kind of expensive for that distinction. If you've been to a Hilton Garden Inn, you pretty much know what to expect. This one had the same layout, decor and carpet as all the others we've stayed in. It did have the distinction of having a very nice old man who brought us room service. Yummy chicken sandwich!
We didn't actually stay at the Hi-Lo Motel in Weed, CA, but it definitely had the best motel sign we saw on this trip. And we have it on good authority that the Hi-Lo offers a great night's sleep and a fabulous breakfast. It also has a nice view of Mt. Shasta.
Sunset Motel Bandon, OR -- This motel is a real treat. It's off the highway, on the beach in Bandon, with a view of the sea stacks (big rocks in the beach and ocean) and a stairway down the cliff to the beach. We stayed in the cheapest kind of room they have, "Original Ocean View Rooms," which are 60s-style motel rooms; it cost $75. There are a variety of other types of rooms, including fancier motel rooms and a couple of vacation houses. We saw a big-ass banana slug on the way down to the beach. Brass Rail Inn Redway, CA -- Redway is at the southern end of the Avenue of the Giants in Humboldt County, CA, and is just a few miles down the road from the more touristy and cute Garberville. The Brass Rail Inn is a former brothel, and a perfectly nice little motel ($60.50), but unfortunately on the night we were there, there were a ton of noisy people staying next to and above us and so I couldn't sleep. But anyway I still liked it pretty well. It's next to the Brass Rail Inn Steak House, which has a really nice bar, but we decided not to eat dinner there because it's really expensive.
